As the story progresses, we get two more POV characters but those aren’t introduced until they meet our “main” characters. Those are the ones who introduce us to the world and the problem of the water shortage. We start the book with two POV characters, Alyssa and Kelton. Yeah, I know that sounds expectionally dull but stay with me for a second. What I really want to complement about Dry is its structure. And while Dry isn’t Arc of a Scythe, it’s still a very thought-provoking and gripping read. I had just finished Neal Shusterman’s Arc of a Scythe and so naturally I was afraid that his other works wouldn’t reach the same level of awesomeness. Going into this book, I was a little scared. Each of them will need to make impossible choices to survive. When her parents go missing, she and her younger brother must team up with an unlikely group in search of water. Suddenly, Alyssa’s quiet suburban street spirals into a warzone of desperation and violence. Life has become an endless list of don’ts: don’t water the lawn, don’t take long showers, don’t panic. The drought-or the tap-out, as everyone calls it – has been going on for a while. Synopsis: Everyone’s going to remember where they were when the taps ran dry.

6/12/2023 0 Comments Santa Muerte by Cynthia PelayoLauren’s life-long fascination with the Grimm brothers’ fairy tales enables her to understand the dark, supernatural forces at work. While most of the adults treat the legend as harmless child’s play, Lauren not only knows the Pied Piper is real, but that she owes him something and he has come back to collect. Driven by a bleak past and a duty to protect the innocent, Lauren takes deep interest in a spate of teen deaths that bear the mark of the Pied Piper. Yet we sympathize with her on account of her tragic past which includes the disappearance, suicide, and murder of family members. As a coffee addict and workaholic, the young detective’s self-destructive tendencies push away the people who love her the most. Like many literary detectives, Lauren has difficulty maintaining relationships with family and friends. Pelayo masterfully blends the police procedural, horror, and modern fairytale genres to produce a narrative that centers on Detective Lauren Medina, a flawed yet compelling protagonist. Pelayo compels us to ask who summoned the Pied Piper and why. Repeat a nursey rhyme in a darkened room and he – the Pied Piper – will appear to fulfill your request. In Children of Chicago (2021), acclaimed gothic and horror author Cynthia “Cina” Pelayo creates a new urban legend along the lines of Bloody Mary and the Candyman. Finally, students will be encouraged to explore multiple ways of engaging with this modernist poem in order to better understand, and revision, its relevance to contemporary poetic practice. How does the stylistic polyphony of voices in the poem affect the way we read it? Does Eliot’s use of what he called ‘the mythic method’ in Joyce’s Ulysses contribute to the poem’s overarching structure? You will also focus on the aural resonances of the poem and, by listening to performances of the text, will appreciate its inherent, if elusive, humour. This course will examine the connection between this aesthetic of fragmentation and the ‘ruins’ of a post-War Europe that Eliot attempts to recreate. It is unclear who is speaking at this point, because. These words thematically mirror this seminal poem’s fragmentary structure, episodic nature, and allusiveness to a range of texts and perspectives. Translated from German, the sentence reads Im not Russian at all, I come from Lithuania, a true German. ‘These fragments I have shored against my ruins’, says the speaker in T S Eliot’s The Waste Land. While the Lees try to adjust to their new lives, an evil is stirring in Metropolis: the Ku Klux Klan. She’s awkward, quiet, and self-conscious of how she looks different from the kids around her, so she sticks to watching people instead of talking to them. Tommy adjusts quickly to the fast pace of their new neighborhood, befriending Jimmy Olsen and joining the club baseball team, while his younger sister Roberta feels out of place when she fails to fit in with the neighborhood kids. Lee is eager to begin his new position at the Metropolis Health Department, his two kids, Roberta and Tommy, are more excited about being closer to the famous superhero Superman! I was never a huge fan of Superman. 6/11/2023 0 Comments Snapdragon graphic novel book 2Set in a trailer park, there is a lot of racial and age diversity in the heroes as well as lesbian and transgender representation. The inclusivity is this book is wonderful. Full of magic, mystery and positive life lessons, Snapdragon is one of the very best graphic novels I’ve read lately. The story follows Snapdragon-there is a family tradition to name daughters after favorite flowers-as she befriends an old woman everyone believes to be a witch. Even better, this book is full of wonderful inclusive representation and trans positivity. Leyh, known for her work on The Lumberjanes and her webcomic SuperCakes, has crafted a really delightful and robust narrative with plenty of side-plots, flashbacks and a cast of dynamic characters that all centers on the theme of how looks can be deceiving. Snapdragon by Kat Leyh is absolutely charming and heartwarming. 6/11/2023 0 Comments Ima Pigg by Elizabeth Allen
6/11/2023 0 Comments Tropic of capricorn novelMary Gaitskill claimed recently that “Today, I don’t think any man would dare write what Miller wrote, which is unfortunate. Mailer’s essay burns as a piece of literary criticism that clarifies the philosophical, aesthetic, and political motives of modern authors like Miller, who have gone the way of the dinosaur. In it, he analyzed in detail the passages quoted by Millett and restored to their full meaning what Millett had cut down to make her points, occasionally even putting words in their mouths. Mailer’s article “The Prisoner of Sex” was subsequently published in Harper’s. Sexual Politics was a bestselling cornerstone of the Women’s Liberation movement, and Norman Mailer was invited to respond as a journalist not only to the charges against him in the book, but to cover the women’s movement as a whole. Lawrence - and celebrated the homosexuality of Jean Genet. In 1970, Feminist Kate Millett published Sexual Politics, a dissertation that attacked the literary misogyny of three modern male authors - Henry Miller, Norman Mailer, and D.H. But my wonderful agent Rebecca Podos didn’t give up on the book, and we sold in July, after being on sub for seven-ish months, which consisted of an R&R (revise and resubmit). Sub was hard, like months long without any reprieve hard. Now to talk a little about my journey to a book deal. I learned to cook from scratch, go out less and eat-in more. Pandemic changed my life, just like so many others. And when I finished it and was finally ready to bring my book baby into the world, the pandemic happened. When I started writing, life was different. Yeah, thirteen-year-old me would be super excited if she knew that Sana will have her book published. Reader, that book, predictably went nowhere! But, I did keep my protagonist name from that book in my debut “The Mis-Arrangement of Sana Saeed” this year. I wrote my first book when I was in middle school and an Austen fan growing up in a small town in India, I had big dreams of being the youngest writer ever. Who am !?! And why would you want to read about me? I’m an engineer by profession, a writer by heart, and a tree-hugger by choice. But as pieces of writing the stories are predictable but worse than that the stories fail to hold together for any length of time. The show looks cheap and one assumes that Holland and the name cast took most of what was probably too little to produce the show properly anyway. Ray Wise comes off OK the rest just seem to be slumming. Some genre names pop up to get a paycheck. All of them look like state of the art CGI from say 1987. Poorly matched real elements with fake 2 dimensional backgrounds, terrible fake blood spurts and fake explosions. What physical effects are attempted are poor and the bulk of them are bad CGI. Holland at times seems unable to shoot a scene so that it will even cut together properly. Though it wouldn't be a good radio show as the dialog is dull and the ideas shop worn and don' t vary much from episode to episode. The show is endlessly tirelessly talky, you can turn off the picture and probably imagine a better show than what you'll see. This show feels like it was made in the late 1980's, rejected only to be unleashed on a world that has come to tolerate less quality. |
